Dr Emma Bede will present "Beyond OCD: Working with Compulsions in Neurodivergent Clients" at the Beyond OCD event on September 9th. This online workshop focuses on distinguishing and effectively working with compulsive behaviors experienced by neurodivergent individuals, which may often be mistaken for OCD. Led by Dr Emma Bede, this session offers valuable insights into understanding and addressing these issues in a way that respects neurodiversity.
Neurodivergent people often experience repetitive or compulsive behaviour: things that they can't stop doing, saying or thinking. At first glance these can often look like OCD, but there are many other possible ways of understanding them, including tics, stims, special interests, self-soothing, hyperfocus, autistic inertia, and more.
This workshop will focus on accurately assessing and formulating any kind of repetitive behaviour, in order to help people make changes that are personally meaningful to them. We will look at ways of adapting traditional OCD therapies to make them more effective for neurodivergent people, and other therapeutic approaches to address repetitions that are not OCD.
