Course Summary (Welcome to Watercolour - 10 a.m. 10 Sept)
Week 1: Getting to Know the Medium
Understanding the behavior of water mixed pigment. We'll start with painting a simple object and background monochromatically in a controlled manner, acquainting you with the material and "personality" of pigment on surface.
Week 2: Introduction of the Colour Palette
Grasp basic theory and palette organisation for clean, effective applications. Explore control in colour intensity and temperature shifting. We'll paint a small flower, witnessing the full spectrum of what's possible with colour!
Week 3: Useful Techniques in Context
Expand upon applied techniques of adding paint to surface such as wet into wet, charging, dry brushing, glazing and more. Create a beautiful highland landscape using these exciting new brush marking methods!
Week 4: Painting a Still Life - Blocking In
Extending the palette, we will make additions to colour organisation. Begin a two part still life painting with a pleasing and dynamic composition.
Week 5: Painting a Still Life - Final Revisions
Continuation of the still life creating rich light and shadow relationships, colour punches, and detail. A culmination of your new skills and creative journey.

Course Summary (The Watercolour Portrait - 2 p.m. 15 Oct)
Week 6: Understanding the Drawing
Learn how to make an effective under drawing using the rules of proportion, gesture, and designing shadow shapes for accurate facial structure and anatomy. We will paint from a photographic reference using monochromatic washes to learn the power of value, and form building.
Week 7: Palette Design and Brush Control
Discover palette organisation and colour practice that will bring your understanding of flesh tones and temperature to the next level. Command a variety of brush effects for blending, and keep luminous colour where you want it. We will paint from a photographic reference using the full palette.
Week 8: Working with a Live Model
Begin a new painting from a professional live model! The earlier rehearsal paintings and new knowledge will have you confident and ready to paint from life - as is done in classical Atelier style academies. An under drawing and initial wash will be established, with guidance on capturing the sitter's likeness.
Week 9: Developing the Portrait
Continue working with our live model to deepen washes and important colour/value relationships. Using variegated or gradated washes, mingling or charging, you will decide with various techniques where to maintain control, or where to play with full expression.
Week 10: Final Details and Finishing Touches
Our final session with the live model, and the refinement of your painting. Learn the art of glazing, accenting, and selectively adding important details without "over working". Bringing together the best decisions for a polished finish.
