An Introduction to Supporting Young People Effected by Someone Else’s Alcohol and Drug Use
This training focuses on young people aged between 12 and 26 years old, who are impacted by another person’s drug or alcohol use. During the training we will explore how to best understand the needs of young people, the barriers they face, and how practitioners can respond effectively.
Working with young people affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use is complex; getting our approach right can lead to meaningful connections and support.
This training was co-created with the Routes young people supported by Scottish Families. They will share with you, through videos and in person, the impact of growing up in a household where there is substance use and the difference good support can make
By completing this training, you will be able to:
· Recognise that every young person has distinct needs and experiences, and understand the value of relationship-based practice.
· Identify the barriers to support experienced by young people affected by someone else’s substance use.
· Identify methods to effectively connect with, and to support, young people affected by someone else’s substance use.
“This was undoubtedly one of the best workshop events I have done. It is this sort of approach that helps give anyone the ability to see things from someone else's perspective. Fundamentally, it's really just how to teach real empathy.”
“The team have been talking about it ever since, and I can’t begin to describe the impact it has made on them, not just the content but the way it was presented with the narrative of lived experience throughout. They are really enthused about your workshop, and it really will make a difference to our work moving forward.”
