The East Anglian Storytelling Festival is delighted to present A Celebration of Crankies at Cambridge Junction on Monday 14 September. This unique event promises an evening of enchanting storytelling, brought to life through the captivating medium of crankies. Often described as magical stories in a box, crankies are a traditional folk art form where illustrated scrolls are revealed from within a box as a narrator tells a story. Audiences will be treated to a collection of tales presented by a talented quartet of performers: Taletta Bierens, Wendy Dacre, Sarah Hurley, and Peter Stevenson. Each storyteller will unveil miniature glimpses into worlds that transcend the everyday, using the visual artistry of crankies to enhance their narratives. Prepare to be transported to realms of wonder and imagination. The performance commences promptly at 7:30pm. Tickets are available for a modest £3, offering excellent value for an evening of extraordinary entertainment.
The company of cranksters: Taletta Bierens, Wendy Dacre, Sarah Hurley and Peter Stevenson Come for an evening of storytelling with crankies – but it’s not what you think! Not grouchy characters, but magical stories in a box. Crankie storytellers are the most even-tempered people in the world (with maybe a touch of eccentricity) – and they stories they tell will give you miniature glimpses into another world. In this show you will discover the art of the crankie: a story told through scrolling pictures in a box turned by ‘cranks’ – a delightful and unexpected folk artform which brings a whole new dimension to storytelling for all ages. In this show you will discover a whole new world of unforgettably thrilling and atmospheric stories: and meet some of the most talented crankie performers from across the country and beyond. Encounter the Snake on the Western Wave told and sung by Wendy Dacre, shadow puppeteer and textile artist extraordinaire: and Sarah Hurley’s encounters with the more than human, in spooky tales from her Devon roots. Meet illustrator-author Peter Stevenson, launching three books of Welsh folktales, in magnificent crankie form: and all the way from the extraordinary bee garden in Bloemendahl, Netherlands, storyteller Taletta Bierens with the story of the Flying Ship. ‘fantastically varied creations’ ‘ unusual, great stories: pure and beautiful images’ Supported by the East Anglian Storytelling Festival with funding from Arts Council England Suitable for ages 12+ (some slightly dark themes) Duration: 1.5-2 hours No booking fees when you become a Member – save from £3 per ticket!
