21 Birds: The Changing Bird Sound of Salford

Everyone is a musician! Can you play a musical instrument? Or perhaps you just love making music and can bring to life a triangle, claves or another simple instrument?

Come and join us at the Laudato Si’ Centre for a unique day of music, birdsong, nature and history as we explore the changing soundscape of Salford.

Imagine Salford before the roads, factories and traffic — what might you have heard? The calls of birds, the rustling of trees, running water and the sounds of wildlife. How different would that soundscape be today?

Through our 21 Birds workshop, we will explore these sounds and bring them together in an original piece of music. In the morning we will explore historic records charting how the community of birds that live in Salford has changed from pre-industrialised times to the present day. We will then experiment with rhythm and sound, creating a musical journey through Salford’s past and present.

In the afternoon, we will bring everything together, rehearsing, playing and perfecting our finished piece of music.

Whether you are an experienced musician or simply enjoy making sounds and being creative, there’s a part for you.
