An artist-led walkthrough of Jeffrey Gibson’s signature flags at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in celebration of his residency this summer

In celebration of Jeffrey Gibson’s residency at Hauser & Wirth Somerset this August, join us for an artist-led walkthrough of his signature flags, on view as part of our outdoor sculpture presentation.

Led by artist Jeffrey Gibson and Hauser & Wirth Senior Director Dea Vanagan, the tour will provide a unique insight into the eight flags on display across the farmyard and in front of Durslade Farmhouse.

Each flag features a different pattern, text, lyric, or slogan that draws on American history, Queer rights and Indigenous perspectives. First presented as part of ‘the space in which to place me,’ Gibson’s 2024 exhibition for the United States Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia, the eight flags were arranged around the pavilion’s exterior facade, disrupting its traditional architecture with a powerful and joyous presence. A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and of Cherokee descent, Gibson’s multidimensional practice emphasizes collaboration and forges new platforms for Indigenous voices and makers.

The tour is open to all ages; however, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are free, but advance booking is essential. If you are able, we encourage donations to our 2024 – 2026 charity partner Good Company Bruton.

Before the tour begins, the garden and Education Lab will be open from 10 am. Explore our exhibition ‘Angel Otero. Agua Salada’ from 12 pm.

Farm Shop will be serving coffee and pastries from 9 am, and Da Costa will be taking lunch reservations from 12 pm.

About Jeffrey Gibson

Jeffrey Gibson is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and convener celebrated for his work in painting, installation, video and performance. For over two decades, he has examined how language, pattern and music construct meaning, synthesizing Indigenous and Western traditions through vibrant color, complex patterning and layered sound.

A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, Gibson represented the US at the 2024 Venice Biennale with his acclaimed exhibition ‘the space in which to place me,’ which made its US debut at The Broad, Los Angeles CA in May 2025. In June 2025, he unveiled a site-specific installation at Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland, and recently presented four figurative sculptures in ‘The Genesis Facade Commission: Jeffrey Gibson, The Animal That Therefore I Am’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York NY. His work is held in many permanent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York NY; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA; Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington DC; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Canada; Denver Art Museum, Denver CO; and Portland Art Museum, Portland OR.

He lives in New York’s Hudson Valley and is artist-in-residence at Bard College.
