The event takes place in York at Hungate Reading Cafe on 16 September 2026. It is a community gathering that will offer a look through the history of Hungate, covering topics such as Viking hounds and Roman brick-pits.
Join us for a midweek meander through Hungate's hidden history!
The street of the Viking hounds. The Roman brick-pit. The Ice Age lake. Hungate, on the eastern edge of central York, has a fascinating history, much of it hidden beneath the modern city. Join York's Hidden History for Historic Hungate, a lunch-time exploration of the area's ancient and natural history, and its forgotten people and places.
Starting and finishing outside Hungate Reading Cafe, we will spend around an hour walking round this ancient part of York. We'll cover thousands of years in a few hundred yards, from Hungate's prehistoric origins to its place at the heart of industry, and connecting the smart streets of St Saviourgate to the filth of the Foss.
Our Historic Hungate walks normally take place on the third Wednesday of the month, from 12.15 to 1.15pm. Tickets are free to book, but if at the end you feel inclined to make a donation we will not object!
