Whether you're flying solo, planning a date, wrangling the kids, or out with friends, Curious About Winchester is your perfect excuse to get outside and uncover the city’s secrets — with a twist!
These two self-guided heritage walks come with an optional treasure hunt theme, turning your stroll into a playful quest through Winchester’s iconic sights and hidden gems. No tour guides, no time limits — just you, your curiosity, and a city full of surprises.
What’s the Experience Like?
- Follow easy maps and directions
- Solve clues (answers included!)
- Learn fascinating facts about Winchester’s past and the people who shaped it
- Get ideas for things to see and do along the way
- Choose a printed booklet or instant download (use on up to 3 devices or print at home)
The Walks:
1. Cathedral Circular - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From the leafy exterior of Winchester’s Cathedral, this route moves quickly into the city centre - past specialist shops and quaint pubs, wrapped in fascinating history. Past a Middle Ages’ gate and an ancient Hall housing King Arthur’s Round Table, you now arrive at six military museums, situated on the historic site of Peninsula Barracks - before returning to a gentler side of the city, and the magnificent Cathedral.
2. Cathedral to Abbey Gardens - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Start your walk with stunning views of the magnificent cathedral, none better than from Dean Garnier's Garden. Past Pilgrim School (the cathedral's choir school), through an ancient gate, and out into some quaint and timeless streets. Take a look at Winchester College, which dates back to the 14th century. Pass Wolvesey Castle, and walk alongside the pretty River Itchen, before ending at the fabulous Abbey Gardens.
Both walks are wheelchair and buggy accessible, with minor diversions if needed on the first walk.
So grab your walking shoes, your sense of adventure, and maybe a brolly — and let Winchester surprise you. No bookings. No pressure. Just pure, pocket-friendly fun.
