Course Overview
Following the success of the Woodwork Wonders course by Pete Moorhouse, this session builds on those creative approaches by exploring the powerful use of materials in learning.
This session explores how creative materials can be used as powerful tools to support learning. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the role of materials within Foundation Learning pedagogy, focusing on how clay, paper, fabric, light and loose parts can stimulate creativity, curiosity and independence.
Through a blend of practical exploration and examples of effective practice, participants will explore how to move beyond surface-level activities towards rich, meaningful learning experiences that support engagement and progression.
Target Audience
Practitioners working with children aged 3–8, including teachers, HLTAs and teaching assistants. The session is also relevant for leaders seeking to strengthen provision and learning environments.
Session Aims
By the end of the session, participants will:
Understand how materials support creativity and learning
Confidently use a range of materials in everyday provision
Design open-ended, meaningful learning experiences
Reflect on practice to improve learner outcomes
As part of the course, participants will receive a range of high-quality materials to support ongoing use in their own settings. Resources provided will include clay, wire, hessian, embroidery hoops, metal clay cutters, rolling pins and a range of other creative materials. These resources are intended to help practitioners explore the ideas introduced during the session and continue developing rich, open-ended learning experiences within their provision
