The Chimney in the Field; the development of a 16th century dwelling in Hilderstone, Staffordshire
By Dr. Lee Hyland, Chair, Stoke-on-Trent Museum Archaeological Society (SoTMAS) will deliver a talk about the SoTMAS investigation into the mystery of the chimney that once stood on its own in a field in Hilderstone.
It will demonstrate how it has been possible, using the surviving archaeology, to reconstruct the development of a simple 16th century dwelling into a more substantial and prosperous one by the end of the 17th century. A period during which prosperity amongst the successful businesses began to grow and how this is reflected in the material culture of the tenants of “Chimney Field.”
