Bagging Ethels (peaks in the Peak District) is an increasingly popular activity! This walk provides the opportunity to bag 4!!!!

Start Location: Main Road ( the heart of Hathersage). The space next to the flag poles / bus stop in the centre of the village.

Particpant Expected Fitness Level: This is a strenous walk includding strenous uphills, woodland and ricky terrain. No facilities or refreshments available on route so please bring supplies. Sorry not for the faint hearted!

Participant Expected Experience: Regular walkers capable of multiple peaks in a day, in tough terrain. Sorry not for the faint hearted!

Full Description:

Ethel Haythornwaiite (1895 - 1986) has been instrumental in protecting the Peak District that so many know and love otday. In 1924, Ethel founded the local campaign group that would become CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire, to protect the Peaks from development. She served as its honorary secretary until 1980, and as CPRE’s national director during World War II. In 1945, she was appointed to the government’s National Parks committee, helping make the case for the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. This paved the way for the creation of National Parks, starting with her beloved Peak District.

To recognise her extenive contribution to the Peak District; the peaks in the Peak Diistrict have collectively been termed Ethels. In the same way as in the Lake District thre are Wainwrights which walkers enjoy 'bagging' , walkers now enjoy bagging Ethels. Being peaks they present a challenge! Rambler groups in the area often climb Ethels, therefore if this walk is not for you yet there are always opportunities to work up to bagging an Ethel; starting by bagging them one at a time! Whereas this walk includes 4 on one day!

It is a circular walk from Hathersage. Ticking off 4 Ethels whilt learning about the legacy and work of Ethel Haythornewaite with staff from thhe charity that she founded (CDPE Peak District South Yorkshire.

The route is Hathersage to Higger Tor, White

Public Transport:

From Sheffield Interchange bus 276 8:46 arrrives Hathersage about 09:22.

Train from Sheffield station 09:14 arrives Hathersage 09:32 then 10 minute walk to walk start.
