2026 marks 50 years since the death of the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. Join historian Alan Stewart and Sheffield Archives for a talk on Victorian crime in Sheffield.
When a Sheffield criminal is included in a Sherlock Holmes story, and a popular comic strip in children’s comics, there must have been a reason for their fame. When a Sheffield female killer’s trial led to ‘tickets only’ for the public gallery, why was it so popular? You might well ask. When two Sheffield killers’ victims were laid to rest in the same Sheffield graveyard, and when both killers were defended by the same barrister, the plot thickens. These are just a few of the Sheffield crime puzzles we think Agatha would have enjoyed. This illustrated talk will use archives, newspapers and new photographs.
