The 90-minute documentary was produced over three years and is a collaboration between Greenpeace, Ekspedisi Indonesia Baru, Ubi, Yayasan Pusaka Bentala Rakyat, Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Papua Merauke, and Watchdoc Documentary.

Directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono and Cypri Jehan Paju, the film chronicles logging, militarism, and Indigenous Papuan resistance to the Indonesian government’s food estate project in Papua. It offers a powerful insight into the struggle to protect ancestral lands, forests, communities and ways of life in the face of extractive development and colonial violence.

After the screening, there will be a chaired Q&A with Indigenous Human Rights Defenders from West Papua. This will be a rare opportunity to hear directly from people working to defend land, life and justice in one of the world’s most under-reported struggles.

This event is open to anyone who wants to better understand how colonialism, militarism, environmental destruction and extractive power continue to shape people’s lives today. It will be especially relevant for people involved in climate justice, anti-racist organising, Indigenous rights, international solidarity, Palestine solidarity, peace, human rights, faith, student and green movements who want to learn about West Papua as another urgent example of resistance to occupation, resource extraction and state violence.

Why this event matters

West Papua is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse forests and to Indigenous communities whose relationship with land is central to culture, identity and survival. For decades, Indigenous Papuans have faced militarisation, land grabbing, environmental destruction, discrimination and restrictions on freedom of expression.

This event creates space for Sheffield audiences to learn, listen and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Papuan communities defending their rights, territories and futures. It is also an invitation to connect struggles: to recognise how colonialism, imperialism, climate breakdown, land dispossession and the silencing of communities are linked across places, while listening carefully to the specific history and leadership of West Papuan people.

50% of proceeds from this event will go to support the work of Papua Partners, a UK-registered charity working 'with Papuans, for Papua' to secure peace and justice for the Indigenous Peoples of West Papua.

Papua Partners works in solidarity and partnership with local Indigenous groups, churches and civil society partners to build peace, support environmental justice and strengthen community-led change. Founded in 2006, the charity supports Indigenous Papuan communities responding to the complex social, political and environmental situation in West Papua, with a focus on local leadership, resilience and long-term transformational change.
