On Wednesday 8 December, ecotherapist Harriet Sams will host the fourth instalment of her online series, delving into the symbolism and significance of the Elder Futhark's Rune Perthro. This event is part of her comprehensive exploration of the 16-character alphabet, which dates back to around 250BC, and forms the core of her ecotherapy approach. With a particular emphasis on Perthro's connections to the natural world, this online event promises to be a thought-provoking and insightful experience. Harriet's in-depth knowledge of the Elder Futhark, gained through extensive study, will undoubtedly provide a rich foundation for the discussion. The event is scheduled to take place from 1pm and, at a price as affordable as £1, offers an accessible opportunity for those interested in exploring the intersection of nature and spirituality. As Harriet continues to share her expertise, this series is set to provide a unique and captivating experience for those attending.
The Rune Perthro and working with the natural world.
The Elder Futhark is a Nordic Runic alphabet that dates to around 250BC and was used throughout Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland. It has been found carved on stones, described within poetry and immortalised within mythology. Over time, its significance has become increasingly symbolic, mythological, and even esoteric, rather than poetic or functional.
This drop-in course is designed to support us as we familiarise ourselves with the Runes as symbols of meaning when considered as a method of therapeutic Earth connection.
Familiarising ourselves with such an ancient framework of symbols and meaning requires a dedicated period of a year or more. This year-long online journey invites us to build community as we explore the Runes.
We will learn about the meaning of each Rune, how it is important to connect to each Rune by setting an intention, giving thanks for the innate wisdom of the Rune, and honouring that each Rune is connected to a sense of knowing that transcends logic and personal understanding. We will practice outdoors with each Rune (as much as is reasonable and possible), returning to the group to share our experiences and learn from one another.
As an additional practice, you are invited to make your own set, but this is not necesary for attendance. Do not worry if you’re not creative! A sheet is provided for you to do this practice on paper. You may wish to create your own set, made of wood or stone, at a later date. If you already have Runes, please bring them to each session.
