On the 110th anniversary of the downing of two Zeppelin airships aimed at London, explore how new technology changed the air war over London
September 1916 was a turning point in the air campaign against Britain in the First World War. Before this date, German Zeppelin raiders flew with impunity, as there was no effective way of stopping these giant airships; but the advent of new bullets meant that they were now vulnerable to intercepting fighters. In this illustrated talk by expert Ian Castle, you will hear the story of how this was achieved and what it meant for the wider war effort.
About the Speaker
Ian Castle is the author of numerous books detailing Germany’s air campaign against Britain in the First World War, including Osprey’s First Blitz – Bombing London in the First World War, Zeppelin Inferno: The Forgotten Blitz 1916, and The First Blitz in 100 Objects.
