GAIL’s Knead to Read Book of the month is, Death Writ Large, by Susie Dent
Join us for a warm and thought-provoking early evening with author Susie Dent, as she discusses her clever new novel, Death Writ Large, published by Zaffre at GAIL's Bakery Southwark Firestation. It's a rare chance to spend time with one of Britain's most beloved wordsmiths, in an intimate and welcoming setting.
Death Writ Large opens in Oxford, where strange symbols begin appearing as graffiti across the city. When lexicographer Martha Thornhill recognises the marks from an alphabet created by a dead writer whose papers she once studied, she suspects something darker than a prank. As further graffiti turns up near the body of a university lecturer, and the police move to close the case as suicide, Martha and her colleagues are drawn into unravelling a tragedy that reaches far beyond the city's ancient walls.
This event is part of Knead to Read, GAIL's new initiative bringing communities together through the love of literature, pairing great books with the warmth of a shared table. As part of the conversation, Susie will speak about the inspiration behind Death Writ Large, touching on language, deception, and the secrets that lie hidden in plain sight. She'll also reflect on the joy of storytelling, sharing honest insight into her creative process, the research that shaped the book, and how her years in Dictionary Corner inform the puzzles at its heart.
Every guest will receive:
A hardback copy of DEATH WRIT LARGE RRP £XX, personally signed by Susie
An exclusive Knead to Read tote bag
A hot drink of your choice
A freshly baked cake from GAIL's to enjoy during the event
Pull up a chair, enjoy something delicious, and take part in an afternoon of conversation and connection.
