This illustrated talk will introduce you to the fascinating history of Clerkenwell.
Discover the Clerk’s Well which gave the area its name, the gateway to an ancient monastery, a church with a 12th century crypt, the site of an underground prison, an unusual library and an 18th century courthouse. Discover the area’s connections with Shakespeare, Hogarth, Dr Johnson and Dickens. Learn of Clerkenwell’s radical connections with Lenin, Marx and Peasants Revolt Leader Wat Tyler. Coming up to date we’ll hear how this area has now become a centre for some of London’s top architectural and interior design practices.
