George Garrett – Liverpool’s Working-Class Writer and Unsung Hero

To accompany the George Garrett: Everyday Histories – Liverpool’s Working-Class Writer and Unsung Hero exhibition at Toxteth Library, members of the George Garrett Archive group will give a special talk exploring Garrett’s remarkable life, writing and legacy.

George Garrett was a Liverpool-born seafarer, writer, playwright and political activist whose work captured the realities of working-class life in the city during the interwar years. Drawing on more than a decade of research, archive material and the Garrett family collection, the talk will explore his experiences at sea, his political activism, his writing, his involvement with Unity Theatre and his encounter with George Orwell.

The event offers a chance to discover more about one of Liverpool’s most important but still too little-known working-class writers, and the work undertaken to bring his story back into public life.
