About This Event

Lunchtime Talks at Kendal Museum, titled Five Women, Five Lives, runs on 8 August 2026 at 12:00. Admission costs between £6.00 and £10.00.

The Victims of Jack the Ripper.

Join us at Kendal Museum for a thought-provoking lunchtime talk with historian Seren Shaw, exploring the lives of the five women whose stories have long been overshadowed by the legend of Jack the Ripper.

Drawing on historical research, this talk examines the lives of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly, placing them within the social and economic realities of Victorian London. Rather than focusing on the killer, we'll consider who these women were, the challenges they faced, and why remembering them as individuals matters today.

This fascinating and compassionate exploration offers a fresh perspective on one of history's most enduring mysteries, shifting the focus from the infamous murderer to the human stories of his victims, and what we can learn about women's lives and experiences in this period.

Please note that this talk will include some distressing themes not stuitable for younger audiences. Mortuary photographs and descriptions of violence may be used. We recommend that this talk is suitable for those who are 16 and over.
