The Medieval Guildford event on 29 September 2026 at Tunsgate Arch will explore the town’s royal castle history and the impact of the plague on ordinary residents. Entry is free and open to the public.
Travel back to a time when the town had a royal castle, but learn too of the lives of ordinary townfolk frightened by the plague.
A look at Guildford in this period in more depth than is possible on the Guildford Story walk. There is much to discover about the town and the castle, where wicked King John stayed nineteen times. We hear about a warrior king who was actually in love with his wife and the forgotten invasion of 1216 when the castle was surrendered to the French.
This is journey to a different world, where calculations were still being made in Roman Numerals, before buttons began to influence fashion.
The walk is about a half a mile long with regular stops, and about 90 minutes in duration. You should wear suitable clothing for the prevailing weather conditions.
