The show is the first photography exhibition to be held at the Studio Pavilion, adjacent to the House, and is part of year-long celebrations of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the house designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The show has the title: “In the bardo time is frozen like glass” after the Tibetan-Buddhism saying, ‘a state of existence between death and rebirth’. Garth’s work is in black and white and colour and draws on the visual languages of fashion, photography, mid-century painting, and figurative classicism to create a fever dream told through abstraction, still life and portraiture. Through meticulous in-camera effects, and processes of obscuration, fragmentation and shifts in scale; once familiar subjects occupy an uneasy space in the boundary between the natural and the virtual, the material and the void. Commenting on the new show, Garth said: “This is a very exciting show for me – not only is it my first exhibition at the venue, but it’s the first photography exhibition to be held in the Studio Pavilion – one of the most stunning spaces to show in the city. I’m looking forward to meeting a new audience and seeing reactions to my photographs.” Garth is known for his work that explores light, time and perception through photographic storytelling. He gained a Master of Fine Arts in film and photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and is the recipient of major awards, both for photography and art direction. His photographic work evokes the painterly and the mysterious; of secrets revealed without context and spaces recently abandoned without explanation. Since moving to Scotland six years ago after meeting his wife Deborah and falling in love with the Scottish landscape, Garth has set up home in Inverclyde. He is the new guest exhibition curator at The Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock, succeeding Fraser Taylor after eight years in the role. Garth first met Fraser when he helped hang a show at The Beacon and the two are now friends. Fraser encouraged Garth to go for the role, and his first curation was the Summer Open Exhibition - the biggest show to date at the Beacon. Garth has invited Fraser to show recent work at Muddled Syncopation which opens on 5th September. They will also show their work in back-to-back exhibitions at the Studio Pavilion next month. Commenting on the show, Fraser Taylor, said: “I have had the privilege of experiencing Garth Ivan’s images shift and evolve over the last few years. His dynamic photographs continue to surprise and absorb. I am struck by their persuasive quietness and sense of longing, yet their tangible visceral surfaces are forceful and rooted in contemporary discourse.” Designed by ZM Architecture and linked to the Victorian walled garden, the Studio Pavilion is a highly significant addition to House for an Art Lover in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park. Opened in 2014, it provides a space which presents a regularly evolving and active public programme that sits alongside the House as a visitor attraction. With its innovative design enabling it to transform between exhibition space and artist’s studio, the Studio Pavilion hosts exhibitions, events and workshops with leading contemporary artists and designers. Bathed in east-facing light, the Studio Pavilion is nestled in a serene and spiritual setting adjacent to the main building.
