About This Event

SHIPS is a theatre production staged at Leith Arches. The story follows Connor, a merchant seaman who returns to his hometown after his career ends following an altercation at sea.

After a drunken altercation at sea abruptly ends his career, Connor, a merchant seaman, returns to his hometown with little more than a pocket full of severance cash and a desire to quietly self-destruct. Haunted by a lifetime of internal battles -racial identity, isolation, and unresolved trauma, Connor isn’t looking for salvation. He’s looking for numbness. Bars, benders, and bad decisions await. But fate intervenes in the form of Alex, a sharp-tongued, whip-smart barmaid with scars of her own. She and Connor share a distant, buried connection from years ago -one that flickers back to life over whisky and pointed sarcasm. Behind the bar, the two lock horns and swap barbs, but beneath their banter is something deeper: shared damage, mutual understanding, and a fragile sense of hope neither dares to name. As their connection deepens, so does the possibility of something real -a relationship built not on illusion, but on mutual recognition and understanding. Yet the past isn’t easily left behind. Connor’s rage, guilt, and self-doubt threaten to drag him under, while Alex fights battles of her own -financial strain, family fractures, and years of being let down by men she once trusted. Together, they’re presented with a rare chance at redemption, healing, and a final chance at love. But to reach it, they’ll have to navigate the turbulent waters between grief and forgiveness, trauma and trust, self-destruction and self-acceptance. The question isn’t just whether they can love each other -but whether they can live with themselves long enough to try. SHIPS is a raw, intimate portrait of two lost souls clinging to each other in a world that has given them every reason not to trust. Set against the stark backdrop of a working-class port town, the series explores themes of masculinity, race, class, mental health, addiction, and redemption with dark humour and brutal honesty. At its core, SHIPS is a story about survival, not just of the body, but of the heart, and the strange, beautiful ways people find each other when they’ve almost given up.
