First considered highly fashionable, eighteenth-century Sèvres porcelain followed the artistic trends from the 1740s to the 1800s, compelling buyers to spend extraordinary sums of money in vases, tableware, toilet services and small sculptures. Royal patrons such as Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour encouraged the stylistic transition from rococo designs to the classically inspired creations coveted by the next generation of clients. Even during the turbulent times that saw the demise of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, Sèvres stayed afloat thanks to productions decorated with Revolutionary motifs.
