The series showcases an eclectic mix of local and regional talent, ranging from community bands and student ensembles to solo recitalists and folk groups. Past lineups have featured classical guitar ensembles, flute quartets, big bands, traditional Scottish folk groups, and community concert bands. Upcoming Events Programme: Saturday 29th August: Eric Yin Yu and Friend This concert brings together Hong Kong musicians now living in the UK. We arrived here for different reasons—study, work, or the hope of a new life—but we all share a love of music. As performers, educators, and composers, we are delighted to present music connected to Hong Kong, including works by Hong Kong composers and beloved Cantopop songs. Though we are a small community, we have a big dream: to connect people through music. Saturday 12th September: Merry Ukes Formed in May 2023 Merry Ukes is a friendly ukulele band based in Macmerry, East Lothian. We meet every Thursday evening at Macmerry Miners Club from 7.30pm till 9.30pm and regularly perform at Community events, Nursing Homes and Day Care Centres. We welcome beginners to more advanced players, there is no pressure, our aim is to socialize and have fun playing and singing in a relaxed atmosphere. Saturday 26th September: Majk Stokes Majk Stokes is an Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter, poet, musician, environmentalist and Quaker, and he has been writing and performing silly songs for longer than he cares to admit. His subject matter takes in everything from archaeology and Celtic festivals to vegetables and superheroes. More recently he started writing more serious songs and poems about the environment and occasionally politics, and several of his humorous songs also have an environmental message. He has recorded three studio albums and self-published two books of poetry. Saturday 10th October: Edinburgh University Early Music Ensemble The Edinburgh University Early Music Ensemble is an up-and-coming new ensemble in central Edinburgh. Made up predominantly of current and former University of Edinburgh students, the ensemble aims to provide a space to the wider University community for experiencing, appreciating and playing historical music. With a flexible makeup which includes winds, strings, vocals, percussion and brass, the ensemble's repertoire consists of original arrangements of music from the European Medieval and Renaissance periods. The instruments used include both authentic reconstructions and more experimental re-imaginings, with the aim of bringing early music back to life and into today's world. Saturday 24th October: November Group November Group is a string quartet, which was created to perform "Fragments In Time", a suite of compositions by Paul Research. The suite is inspired by 20th century modern classical and synthesised music. As well as the traditional quartet format, it also requires piano, found sound and spoken word intervention at various points. This will be the fourth public performance of Fragments, which has previously been adapted as both an amplified version with spatial sound, and an entirely synth-based version. The group consists of Paul Research (first violin and synth), multi-instrumentalist Julia Lee (second violin and piano), Taryn McCoy (viola), and Florian Polge (cello). Two poems are be performed by Edinburgh-based artist Mira Knoche. Saturday 7th November: Bristo Community Concert Band From the best in movies, to swing and big band, via some popular surprises - you can expect to enjoy some fantastic music from Bristo Community Concert Band. BCCB are a non-auditioning concert band of 40+ regular players based in Edinburgh, there aim is to encourage as many people as possible to enjoy playing music as much as they do. Their players are all about the music, as well as having a great time as they learn from each other. BCCB regularly play concerts and at events around the city each year. Saturday 21st November: Edinburgh Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra The Edinburgh Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra (EMGO) is a plucked string orchestra of mandolins, mandolas, classical guitar and bass. Their repertoire of light classical, film and world music is drawn from many countries and traditions. EMGO arrange performances – whether in small group surroundings or large concert venues – several times each year. The orchestra rehearses every Thursday evening during term time at the Edinburgh Society of Musicians in Belford Road with our conductor, Michael Graham. Saturday 5th December: Sangstream Scots Folk Choir Sangstream are an Edinburgh-based community choir led by acclaimed Scottish traditional musician Corrina Dawn (Hewat). For almost 30 years they've been entertaining audiences with an enchanting variety of (mostly) Scots folk songs, both contemporary and traditional, some well known and others less so. Saturday 12th December: Simmerdim Simmerdim is an Edinburgh-based a cappella trio; named after the long summer twilight in the far North of Scotland, when the sun briefly dips below the horizon and it is never truly dark. Simmerdim sing original arrangements of an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary songs; at festivals, in cafes, at book launches, house concerts and other events. Saturday 19th December: Little Big Horns Little Big Horns is a saxophone quartet made up of five regular members (plus special guests on occasion), who bring a depth of musical talent and experience with them. Little Big Horns are based in Edinburgh and are a group who enjoy each other's company and playing a wide range of music. From jazz to the charts, swinging past classical and TV/film along the way, variety and fun are the only constants.
