On 25 October 2026, The Usher Hall in Edinburgh will host a community event titled 'Give us the vote!' featuring various performers. This gathering explores the history of suffrage campaigning within the city, highlighting the contributions of both women and some men who supported or opposed the cause. Tickets for the performance are priced at £27.80. The programme asserts that the historical narrative extends beyond well-known figures like Emmeline Pankhurst to include lesser-known campaigners active in Edinburgh.
Come and hear about the women, and some men, involved in campaigning for (or against!) suffrage in Edinburgh - it's not all Pankhursts!
Join Ruth to explore the suffrage movement in Edinburgh. From mass meetings, to criminal acts, from those who supported suffrage for all to those who felt women had no place putting an x in a box, the suffrage movement in Scotland is full of characters well worth knowing about. While often history taught in schools focuses on London and the Pankhursts/Fawcetts, much happened north of the border as well!
Starting at The Usher Hall, Ruth will lead you on a walk that takes in Randolph Place, Charlotte Square, the New Town, Royal Scottish Academy, finishing near Calton Hill. Hear names like Nannie Brown, Charlotte Despard, Priscilla and Duncan Bright, Elisa Stevenson, Chrystal Macmillan. Lucy Burns and many more.
The tour will take two and half hours (150mins) in total, and will be outside with no shelter so please wrap up according to the weather conditions! There will be no toilet stops and very few seats along the way.
