Film noir is often thought of as a uniquely American genre, yet in the post-war period it spread to many parts of Europe, Asia and Latin America. This new course, illustrated with numerous extracts and complete films, takes an international perspective in exploring the various ways that film noir manifested itself in different countries, from Argentina to Japan, stopping off in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden and many others.

This course is a follow-up to last term’s Out of the Past – Film Noir and its Origins, but it is not necessary to have attended that course to enjoy this one.

Tutor: Matthew Jarron

Matthew is Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee, looking after a collection of over 30,000 objects, artworks and specimens and running the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, the Tayside Medical History Museum, and the exhibition programme in the Tower Foyer & Lamb Galleries. He also has a lifelong passion for cinema and has taught film history evening classes in Dundee since 2001.
