About This Event

JOHN PHILIP MURRAY TRIO featuring BRIAN PRIESTLEY and DAVE FLEMING performs at the United Arts Club in Dublin, tickets priced at £17.07.

The John Philip Murray Trio look forward to spreading a warm musical balm in the elegant surroundings of The United Arts Club.

We are happy to present a jazz concert by this exciting trio of fine musicians. The John Philip Murray trio has played together over several years in venues ranging from The Crawford Gallery, Cork, to Morrissey’s, for the Doonbeg Jazz Festival, but although two of the three are Dubs, this ensemble hasn’t played in Dublin until now. The relaxing piano nobile room at the Arts Club is a perfect setting for the intimate sounds of an acoustic trio.

Their set will include tunes drawn from sources as diverse as Classic Standards, BeBop, and Brazilian music, with haunting ballads. Balancing excitement and reflection.

Introducing the band…

Since he started learning drums as a young boy in Dublin, John Philip Murray has played in a variety of bands with most of the top musicians of the day. His ear for melody informs his playing. He is always aware of the music around him, singing the form of the tune as he plays – this is particularly evident when he plays solos. He makes use of the full range of sounds available in a standard drum kit to provide colour for the music. He challenges and encourages in equal measure.

Brian Priestley has a wealth of playing experience acquired in the UK and Ireland, where he has lived since 2006. He has worked in bands of all sizes. His knowledge of the repertoire, and the history of the music, is probably unparallelled. He lightly brings it all to bear in his choice of tunes and arrangements. His creativity always leads in satisfying directions. A subtle accompanist, his playing is a joy, for bandmates and audience members alike.

Dave Fleming has provided the double bass soundtrack to much of the jazz played in Ireland over the past 50 years. He is trusted by other great Irish and international players. His taste and musicianship allow soloists to improvise freely, safe in the knowledge that his steady sequence of well-chosen notes will be their bedrock. As a soloist, he invariably chooses melody over showiness, making each solo a composition.

John Philip, Brian and Dave enjoy working off each other’s signature approaches to connect with their audience. The John Philip Murray Trio look forward to spreading a warm musical balm in the elegant surroundings of The United Arts Club.
