The Man Behind the Camera: weekend exhibition and Launch Night

Join us for the launch of a very special weekend. Friday 14th August - Sunday 16th August 2026 is a weekend-long exhibition of photography and art work from throughout the life of Paul Sanderson, my late father.

Launch night - Friday 14th

For family and friends, please come down for the Launch Night (ticketed - please make a donation) on Friday 14th to help us celebrate Dad and his creativity, and remember him together. The launch night runs from 6-8pm. The ticket includes full access to the exhibition, a short 'Reflections on the Exhibition' from the family, and a glass of wine or soft drink.

Weekend exhibition - Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th

For those attending on Saturday or Sunday, entry is free but a donation on the door is welcome. The exhibition will be open 10am - 2pm. All entry donations on Saturday and Sunday and funds raised through the exhibition will go to the Canterbury Oast Trust, the charity supporting Nick.

The Exhibition itself

Dad's photography was fairly wide-ranging, but with a distinctive focus on the south Kent coast in latter years. Notable photographs include an intense sea scape as a storm builds over Dungeness; an intense spring sunrise; and one bustling beach scene that perfectly captures what it is to have a British day at the seaside. I am also thrilled to announce that there is an exciting triptych of New York, Paris and London which mixes his earlier and later photography. For nautical fans, a masterful black and white reflection of a yacht will surely captivate many viewers. Last but not least, Dad's great fondness for birds is evident in his close-ups of a few British garden favourites as they perched on his bird feeder in one of the Lockdowns of Covid-19.

There will also be a small section of family photos of Dad which also show his classic car collection.

Throughout the weekend we will be selling individual prints of Dad's photography, as well as three photography books that he printed himself in the last few years, showcasing his favourite photos and telling stories of his experiences as the cameraman. The stories are very special: they come through distinctively in Dad's voice with his trademark humour and strong observations, giving a unique insight into Dad's artistic mind and perspective on the world. We will also be making available to purchase copies of the humorous cartoons that Dad drew for Practical Classics in the 1980s. All funds from sales will be donated to the Canterbury Oast Trust.

We are also very excited to diaplsy some art from Dad's years at art college in the 1970s, as well as more recent art work from Nick, created by him at the Canterbury Oast Trust's arts centre.

The event will be held at The Nest, a cafe and community events centre situated in the Romney Warren Nature Reserve. Dad loved visiting The Nest and its natural environs. We hope that you will enjoy visiting this unique site too. We are excited about how the nature reserve will provide such a rich backdrop to the exhibition.

The launch night is ticketed mainly so that we know how much wine to order. Proceeds from the tickets will go towards the costs of the exhibition, with any excess funds being donated to the Canterbury Oast Trust.
