A rare opportunity to see A Sad and Beautiful World , Lebanon’s official submission for the 2026 Academy Awards, on the big screen after only limited UK screenings. Cyril Aris’s acclaimed romantic drama follows Nino and Yasmina across three decades of Lebanese history, asking what it means to build a life, love and family in a country repeatedly shaken by war, economic collapse and political crisis. At a moment when Lebanon is often encountered through headlines about conflict, the film offers a different perspective: the humour, courage and everyday choices of people trying to make a future there. Premiering at Venice in 2025, where it won the Giornate degli Autori Audience Award, the film has since screened at more than 100 festivals and won over 20 awards. It was also named a New York Times Critic’s Pick. The screening will be followed by a live online Q&A with director Cyril Aris and actor-filmmaker Mounia Akl, organised by the Lebanese Society of Cambridge Students. Proceeds from the evening will support a survivor of Lebanon’s kafala system and her son as they work towards safety and a more secure future.
