The economic geology and associated industrial archaeology of the Greater Belfast area

The talk will look at the geological context of some of our natural resources that formed the basis of a range of industries in the Greater Belfast (North Down and South Antrim) area together with the historic evidence to be seen today. From brick production to lead and salt mining, lime manufacturing to stone extraction, a range of geological materials have formed the starting point for past industrial development. While the industries are, for the most part, long gone, the evidence for their existence can be found in the form of documentary sources and industrial remains. These important legacies form a clear link to their geological origins reflecting the remarkable geodiversity of our piece of Planet Earth.

Biography:

Ian Enlander is an environmental educator and Earth Heritage Officer with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, best known for his work in marine conservation, particularly for whales, dolphins, and porpoises in Irish waters

He serves as Earth Heritage Officer at the Northern Ireland Environment Agency In this role, he contributes to environmental heritage initiatives, public engagement, and conservation projects, with a focus on marine ecosystems.
