A 4.5 hour volunteer-led walk with a steady ascent to reach the summit of Barrow before descending back to Braithwaite.
Start point: Fellside Bistro (previously known as Jaspers Coffee House), Braithwaite, Keswick
Length: 8.5 km (5.5 miles) with 426m (1,371ft) of ascent
Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 5 (see grade description below)
Starting in Braithwaite, the route follows a track into the picturesque Newlands Valley before joining an old mining track that ascends steadily behind Barrow Fell. A good path then leads to the summit of Barrow, which offers panoramic views across the Lake District fells and lakes. The return journey follows the ridge before descending back to Braithwaite.
While the paths are generally well-defined, there are several steep and stony sections that can become muddy or slippery in wet weather, particularly on the descent. Good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.
Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather. Weather permitting, we will be stopping for a short break on route so please bring refreshments if you wish.
Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
